Breakfast Club

AMA Victoria has recently provided funding to Melbourne Citymission through a Trust to assist with the running of two of their breakfast clubs at Reservoir East Primary School and Broadmeadows Primary School.
Research suggests that children who do not eat breakfast or a nutritious breakfast, lack in motivation, concentration and overall curiosity about learning. This diminishes their potential to learn at full capacity, making a ‘nutritious breakfast’ a priority. With this in mind, two Breakfast Club's were established in Broadmeadows and one in Reservoir addressing these issues.
Three days per week for 40 weeks a year, between 20-30 kids attend to learn more about nutrition and what constitutes healthy living. Children who were once arriving to school late are now coming early for Breakfast Club and making friends with children of other grades, nationality and gender. Verbal feedback from staff indicated a number of children are more alert in the classroom.
The breakfast program is promoted through the school newsletter and flyers, and word of mouth by the staff and school community.
Student comments and observations
Some recent quotes from the students included:
“I don’t have breakfast when Breakfast Club is not on”
“I like it, it is better than bread”
“I used to have chips and coke but now I have cereal and yoghurt-yum man!’
“I eat with my friends and it taste good”
“all my friends come, I have someone to talk to”
“good breakfast, it’s cheap and good for me”
“I came here since the second week and come ever since, it’s a good place”
“I actually get along with people and know now what is healthy”.
A staff member had observed two students walking to school, earlier in the year, regularly eating McDonalds and not arriving at school until 9.15am. These students now regularly attend Breakfast Club, which is a huge achievement for the program and the students.
Students learn from each other. Staff observed that one girl liked having yoghurt on her cereal, now most of her friends are asking for that as well.
