Teddy Bear Program

The Teddy Bear Hospital is a community project that assists children become more aware and accustomed to hospitals and medical treatment. In a Teddy Bear Hospital, children bring their teddy bears (or other favoured toys) to a simulated "hospital" staffed by medical students. These "teddy bear doctors" demonstrate non-invasive procedures in a fun, non-threatening environment.

The project involves medical role-plays for young children aged 5-6. Children, acting as teddy’s parents or Carers, bring their teddy (or other soft toy) to the TBH set up at their Primary School. Through mock consultations with Medical Students and Junior Doctors acting as Teddy Doctors, children learn to understand the entire process of a medical consultation without the pressure of being a patient.

VSAP's Teddy Bear Hospital is being held in conjunction with the AMA Victoria Doctors in Training Subdivision, based upon the successful European Teddy Bear Hospital Program. This program has already been established successfully in Australian cities such as Adelaide, Canberra, Perth and Brisbane. Our group proposes to bring this successful program to Melbourne schools for the first time.
