DiT Classifications Explained
A DiT hospital contract does no more than create a time period for the employment relationship and bind the DiT to their hospital’s policies and procedures. All employment entitlements arise through AMA’s negotiated 2008 Agreement. If your contract wrongly classifies you, the AMA Agreement applies. If your contract provides a classification (or other entitlement) of a better standard than the AMA Agreement, your hospital is bound to that for the term of the contract.
For 2010 Victorian employed DiTs, the 2011 classification ‘year’ level is likely to mislead. The HMO and Registrar ‘year’ level only accurately describes new entrants to Victoria and 2010 HMOs transitioning to Registrar ranks for the first time.
For 2010 HMOs who remain HMOs in 2011, and 2010 Registrars who remain Registrars in 2011, you should now (and for the future) only refer to your HM pay code to confirm you have received your correct experience increment on your anniversary date (this year is 7 February).
PGY-2s
On 1 February 2011, 2010 HMO-1s received their increment advancement (they advance from HM10 to HM11 in recognition of their second year of experience - see chart below). 2011 Interns receive the same HM11 rate because the former HM10 rate has been deleted. HMOs in their second year receive a higher value CME Allowance than 2011 Interns.

PGY-4s
The AMA Agreement prohibits a PGY-4 DiT from being classified as an HMO. The Agreement states (Clause 10.15): “From 1 February 2011, HMO means a Doctor with three or less years of experience and who is not performing the duties of a Medical Officer or a Registrar”. 2011 PGY-4s should usually expect to be classified as Registrar year 1 (in certain circumstances Medical Officer year 1 applies instead).
Registrars
(download VHIA AMA Classification advice document below)
On 1 February 2011, 2010 Registrar-1s received their increment advancement (they advance from HM24 to HM25 in recognition of their second year of experience as a Registrar). 2011 first year Registrars receive the same HM25 rate because the former HM24 rate has been deleted.
AMA Victoria is aware of these issues because Members are using the services of their professional association. If you have concerns about your contract, please contact the Workplace & Advocacy Unit on (03) 9280 8722 for advice.
