Health IT
Despite the promises of HealthSMART, Victoria still does not have ICT infrastructure that caters adequately for the needs of patients. The potential quality and safety benefits of IT are not being realised, costing time and money, and leading to poorer patient outcomes. Improved ICT will not solve all the problems in our health system, but these problems cannot be solved without it.
The state budget papers contained little in the way of funding for ICT. This is a glaring omission particularly given that the Victorian Health Priorities Framework 2012-2022: Metropolitan Health Plan proves that the Baillieu government is well aware of the need for it (see page 21 of the Plan).
AMA Victoria will continue to fight for vital improvements in hospital ICT. The Victorian Department of Health has advised that they are waiting on the Auditor-General’s inquiry into HealthSmart before any action is taken – but the fact is, HealthSmart or no HealthSmart, the standards of technological systems in Victoria’s hospitals must improve. This cannot be achieved without additional funding.
