Nurse Practitioners
AMA Victoria does not support a role for the independent nurse practitioner. Rather, we support a model of primary care that places practice nurses within General Practice, and nurse practitioners in specialised roles in hospitals or primary care, working in collaboration with doctors.
Commonwealth Government reforms, effective from November 2010, allow nurse practitioners to provide Medicare-funded services to patients and to prescribe medications listed on the PBS. In order for nurse practitioners to get MBS and PBS access, there is a requirement that they work in collaborative arrangements with medical practitioners.
The AMA has prepared a guide "Collaborative Arrangements - What you need to know" to help answer many of the questions doctors will have about collaborative arrangements and how they should be structured, as well as identify key issues that doctors should take into account when considering being part of a collaborative arrangement.
AMA Victoria has also prepared a template letter for members should they be advised of a prescription from a nurse practitioner.
So far there are no independent nurse practitioner clinics operating in Victoria. We are keeping close watch to ensure that this remains the case.
