ALP policy will increase public hospital budget by 1%
AMA Victoria President, Mukesh Haikerwal, has welcomed the ALP’s commitment to public hospitals, but said the money announced will only increase the budget spent on public hospitals in Victoria by 1%.
"The spending increase announced by the ALP will boost the overall budget for Victorian public hospitals by 1%, although it does represent a 2.1% increase in the amount of money contributed by the Commonwealth Government," Dr Haikerwal said.
"The percentage increase translates roughly to an extra $34 million per year for Victorian hospitals.
"The Commonwealth Government contributes just over 50% of the budget for Victorian public hospitals, with the state government putting in close to 40% and the rest coming from patients, health funds, and other sources.
"The ALP policy targets the right areas and we would certainly welcome a move to greater transparency of funding arrangements and better coordination between the federal and state governments. Although, the ALP needs to be careful about adding yet another layer to the existing bureaucratic structures.
"Access to quality health care will continue to be a key priority for voters in this election. We look forward to hearing the next announcements from all the parties regarding the future of Medicare and access to GP services."
