AMA calls for $600 million injection
AMA Victoria has called for an increase of $600 million in funding for the public health sector in its submission to the state budget process, AMA Victoria President, Dr Michael Sedgley said today.
"Our hospital staff are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their high standards of care. They are still not receiving enough money, despite significant increases in funding in the past ten months.
"We have outlined a number of areas we believe need extra money, including day-to-day funding, rural emergency services, funding for buildings and equipment, teaching and research, and alcohol and drug services.
"The first and most essential step should be an increase in casemix funding. This would improve access to new treatment and pharmaceuticals, as well as improving recruitment and retention of well trained staff.
"Other areas of concern include:
- Training and research funding. This should be increased by $96 million to match the per capita commitment of the NSW Government.
- Access to critical care. To bring Victoria up to the national average another 45 intensive care unit beds must be opened.
- Stable and transparent funding for buildings and equipment of at least $360 million per year.
- Drug and alcohol services, including family support.
- Appropriate funding for emergency services at small rural hospitals."
