Medical experts debate life and death issues
AMA Victoria has pulled together some of the leading lights in the medical and legal fields to participate in a hypothetical exploring the place of medicine in the debate about quality of life versus quantity of life.
The hypothetical, to be moderated by well-known personality Peter Couchman, is being held on Thursday 24 May at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 6.30pm onwards, as part of the Centenary of Federation celebrations.
The topic, "The Big Debate: Loving Life to Death", will be examined by six panellists:
- Ms Beth Wilson – Victorian Health Services Commissioner
- Prof. Alan Trounson – Deputy Director, Institute of Reproduction and Development, Monash University
- A/Prof. Julian Savulescu – Director Ethics Unit, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute
- Dr Kerryn Phelps – President, Australian Medical Association
- Mr John Snowdon – Partner, Phillips Fox Solicitors
- Dr Ann Sommerville – Head of Department of Medical Ethics, British Medical Association
Four specialist doctors will also be in the audience to contribute to the scenarios being used in the hypothetical.
