Victorians mourn passing of Puggy Hunter

The Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria and Australian Medical Association Victoria, have expressed their grief about the death of the Chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, Dr Arnold (Puggy) Hunter.

CEO of RWAV, Dr Jane Greacen, said she was saddened to hear of the death of Dr Hunter yesterday.

"Puggy was an inspiration to the medical profession, particularly in Aboriginal and rural health and will be remembered for his strong advocacy for his people " Dr Greacen said

"Working with him on a national level, has meant that I have worked harder for the improvement of health outcomes of Aboriginal people in Victoria"

AMA Victoria Vice-President and RWAV Chair, Dr Sam Lees, said Dr Hunter had influenced AMA policy on indigenous health and was well respected among doctors.

"Dr Hunter was a member of our national taskforce on indigenous health and spoke to AMA members on numerous occasions to garner help in improving the poor state of health of too many of our indigenous people. His hard work on behalf of his people will be sorely missed," Dr Lees said.

The RWAV board and staff, and AMA Victoria board, members and staff send their heartfelt condolences to Dr Hunter’s family, friends and community.
