Western Suburbs GP New AMA Victoria President
AMA Victoria’s new President is Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, an Altona GP, who was elected unopposed to the position last night at a Special AMA Victoria Council Meeting.
Dr Haikerwal has been a Vice-President of AMA Victoria for the past three years and has been the spokesperson on GP issues since 1999. For the past ten years, Dr Haikerwal has run a traditional family practice along with his wife, who is also a GP, and two other part-time doctors.
"The time I’ve spent working as a GP has shown me the real difficulties people face negotiating the maze that is our health system," Dr Haikerwal said
"Some of my goals for the AMA Victoria presidency include representing the aspirations of all doctors in Victoria – to work together in an effective, accessible and fair system.
"I will continue to strongly voice doctors’ opinions on public health issues as well as advance initiatives to improve youth access to health care and care of indigenous Victorians.
"Also, funding for community care of those with mental illness, the aged and the disadvantaged, must be greatly improved to achieve better coordination with the hospital sector."
At the same meeting, Dr Mark Yates was elected as Chairman of Victorian Council following the retirement of Dr Paul Nisselle from the position. Doctors John Buntine, Chris Merry and Peter Thurlow were re-elected and join Dr Sam Lees and Michael Sedgley as Vice-Presidents, and Dr Robert House was re-elected as Treasurer.
Dr Paul Nisselle was awarded an AMA Victoria Gold Medal in recognition of his outstanding service to AMA Victoria, the profession and the community.
Dr Haikerwal takes over from Dr Michael Sedgley who has been AMA Victoria President for the past two years. As Chair of the federal AMA’s Medico Legal Committee and Victorian representative on the Federal AMA Council, Dr Sedgley will still be actively involved in the medico political arena
