AMA Victoria Council calls for open disclosure policy on safe drinking water

AMA Victoria Council met last night and recommended that the Board of AMA Victoria call on the State Government to ensure all households have access to a drinking water supply and to be reassured that is it, in fact, safe.

AMA Victoria Spokesman for Environment and Public Health, Dr Mark Yates, has requested the State Government to promote a more transparent approach when it comes to the results of water testing in local communities.

“It is absolutely imperative that the State Government require Victorian Water Authorities to adopt a policy of open disclosure when it comes to water testing” said Dr Yates.

“For the piece of mind of all Victorians it is essential that results of routine tests of the safety of our drinking water are made readily available to the public.”

“It is our right as consumers to be made aware of not only the quality of the water we drink but the steps all the water Authorities take to guarantee its continued safety in terms of public health.”

“If nothing else it would be reassuring to know that all Victorian Water Authorities and other water providers have an effective risk management program that covers all aspects of hazard identification, risk assessment.”

“The application of such preventative measures and monitoring would go along way to safeguard water supplies not only now but for use for future generations” said Dr Yates.

AMA President Dr

Mukesh Haikerwal listed catchment protection as an issue of utmost importance when it came to water quality and availability.

“The State Government must further research, develop and implement protocols aimed at minimising disease risk and maximising water yield” said Dr Haikerwal.
