AMA Victoria calls for urgent action on Goulburn Valley working conditions
President of the AMA Victoria Doctors-in-Training Subdivision, Dr Joseph Sgroi has warned of an impending public health crisis in the Goulburn Valley region should no efforts be made to remedy hospital working conditions for Victorian doctors.
Dr Sgroi said Goulbourn Valley Health must work quickly to fix rostering to ensure a safe work environment but more importantly to ensure the public continues to have access to a fully operational hospital in the area.
“Doctors are facing extreme rostering practices and unreasonable workloads. Unless something is done to remedy these issues it will become virtually impossible to attract doctors to work within the Goulburn Valley” said Dr Sgroi.
“The State Government boasts that the Victorian public health system is treating over 35 000 more patients each year but little has done little to improve doctors working conditions to manage this increased patient demand. It’s an unfair equation”
“Goulburn Hospital is not the only hospital suffering these difficulties. The Government must address the problems confronting rural health.”
“Patient numbers have dramatically increased with no change to workloads; as a result doctors are being stretched to their limits.”
“You now have a population of doctors working tirelessly in the public system who are feeling increasingly disillusioned with the direction of public health in this State.”
“If Goulburn Valley Health can’t adequately provide the means for a safe working environment, ultimately it will be the patients in the area that miss out as more doctors chose to work elsewhere and services become depleted” said Dr Sgroi.
