AMA Victoria calls on Government to fix insurance crisis

The President of AMA Victoria, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, today called on the Government to take further action to fix the current medical indemnity crisis.

“Current Government actions are totally inadequate to relieve the burden of uncertainty and escalating indemnity premiums” said Dr Haikerwal.

“With closure of public hospital outpatient clinics doctors’ private insurance arrangements are now taking up the burden traditionally handled by the state. “

Support to address hikes in medical indemnity costs is included within AMA Victoria’s claim designed to keep doctors operating in our public hospitals.  Discussions are continuing before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC).

Whilst significant progress has been made on a number of items within this claim, Dr Haikerwal called on the Government to solve this crucial item.

Noting that the AIRC had requested that current industrial action cease whilst the negotiations were progressing, Dr Haikerwal said that “AMA Victoria will be recommending the suspension of action to meetings of hospital doctors over the next couple of days.”

Future action by doctors, he said would depend entirely on the willingness of government to address our concerns.

“The Government must urgently deal with the medical indemnity crisis if this claim is to be settled without further disruption to the public hospital system” said Dr Haikerwal.
