AMA Victoria welcomes announcement of new Health Minister
AMA Victoria has welcomed this morning’s announcement that the Honourable Bronwyn Pike will take on the demanding portfolio of Health, replacing outgoing Minister John Thwaites who has been moved to a new super portfolio encompassing environment and water issues.
AMA Victoria President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal congratulated Minister Pike on her new appointment but expressed some regret at the departure of Minister Thwaites.
“Naturally we are disappointed to lose Minister Thwaites as he had a very good grasp of the portfolio having nine years experience in all, as Opposition Health spokesman prior to his appointment as Minister” said Dr Haikerwal
“The changes implemented whilst Minister Thwaites was in charge of the health portfolio were incremental but they were significant. AMA Victoria looks forward to working with Minister Pike to further advance these issues.”
“If the approach to the health portfolio continues in the same open and collaborative manner I have no doubt Minister Pike can continue to improve the health of Victorians” said Dr Haikerwal.
To be a successful Health Minister, Dr Haikerwal suggested that it is essential be clear thinking, with an excellent vision for the future.
Most importantly, he noted that a Minister must work hard at developing sound relationships with those at the industry frontline.
“To have the willingness to not only seek advice, but to heed that advice of people involved in healthcare at a hands-on level, is imperative” said Dr Haikerwal.
Dr Haikerwal was in jovial spirits as he reminded Minister Thwaites that environment and health, particularly air and water quality, is a priority for AMA Victoria at the moment.
“If Minister Thwaites thinks he can shake off AMA Victoria by changing portfolios he is in for quite a surprise” declared Dr Haikerwal
“Our emphasis on the relationship between Public Health and the Environment means Minister Thwaites can look forward to our further lobbying for some years to come” said Dr Haikerwal.
