Budget addresses key health issues

AMA Victoria President, Mukesh Haikerwal, has acknowledged the Government’s efforts in today’s state budget, in which it is making progress in the key issues in the health care system.

"AMA Victoria made a pre-budget submission to the Government highlighting areas which needed increased funding and I’m pleased to see the government is now seriously addressing these areas," Dr Haikerwal said.

"While we are yet to find a government that spends what the public expects on health care, it is encouraging to see this Government making the commitment and listening to the professionals working at the coalface.

"Of particular note is the increased funding for equipment, an area which has been overlooked for too many years. This investment will improve the efficiency of the system, as well as the safety and quality of care.

"The acknowledgment of the crisis in mental health care in the community and the hospital system is also welcomed. There is a desperate need for more beds in hospitals. The major challenge will be adequate funding and support for mental health carers and programs in the community.

"We also welcome extra beds at Frankston and Sunshine Hospitals, the new trauma centre at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the increased funding for medical research, and the addition of aged care beds in a number of rural centres."

"AMA Victoria will continue to provide independent, pertinent advice to ensure health care delivery is optimised.
