Gambling ban the right decision
The Victorian Government’s decision to proceed with a full ban on smoking in most gaming venues was welcomed by AMA Victoria President, Mukesh Haikerwal, today.
"Exposure to smoke is a public health and safety issue. The only way to ensure people aren’t affected is to ban it completely," Dr Haikerwal said.
"While we applaud the government’s clear direction in implementing bans and dispensing with the ‘smoking buffer zones’ we are still concerned that bans will not apply to 10% of gaming venues.
"Implementing ‘buffer zones’ around machines or bars does not remove the danger as smoke will still travel into these zones.
"The release yesterday of the Cancer Council’s study into the effects of passive smoking illustrates the immediate health danger people face from exposure to tobacco smoke.
"AMA Victoria voted in 1997 to support a ban on smoking in all enclosed public places, and the government’s smoking ban in gaming venues is one more step towards achieving this goal.
"I urge all members of parliament to support this legislation and any future moves to widen smoking bans to include all workplaces, including pubs and nightclubs. I hope the whole Victorian community get behind this bold initiative."
