Victorian doctors vote to accept government package

A meeting of Hospital Delegates representing Victorian doctors has voted unanimously to accept a fully government funded package agreed between public hospital employers and AMA Victoria.

The agreement, including recognition of un-rostered overtime and a 12% pay increase over three and a half years, signifies the end of six months of complex industrial negotiations and is a vital step forward in AMA Victoria’s campaign to improve working conditions for doctors in public hospitals around the State.

AMA Victoria President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said the agreement, which establishes parameters to enable a better management of working arrangements, would ensure a high quality Victorian Health system is maintained.

“I believe this is an excellent package, that’s sensible and will bring back some decent working conditions for doctors in

Victoria ” said Dr Haikerwal

“Doctors are working in tumultuous times, and it is important that in such an environment of uncertainty the public hospital system support doctors, of all ages and qualifications by providing not just adequate, but fully supportive working conditions.”

President of AMA Victoria, Doctors in Training Subdivision, Dr Joseph Sgroi said the agreement was a very good outcome and that settlement represented encouraging protection to the medical profession and its future.

“Our obligation is to protect the welfare of our patients by making public hospitals more attractive to future generation of medical practitioners, the agreement enables this to happen” said Dr Sgroi

Dr Haikerwal said although the settlement of the claim could no doubt be regarded as a victory for AMA Victoria members, it was important to remember that the problem of indemnity insurance remains unsatisfactorily addressed.

“We have an obligation to our members to push for change on the issue of medical indemnity, there is no doubt that it remains a central long term issue to doctors in Victoria” said Dr Haikerwal
