Premier Bracks turns his back on Ballarat

In 1954 Stephen Phillip Bracks, today Premier of Victoria, was one of the many people privileged to be brought into this world in the excellent obstetric services available in Ballarat.

Why does the Premier now decline to take action to enable future mothers of Ballarat to have this same right?

Local doctors join with the Ballarat community in demanding that the government, under Premier Bracks’ direction introduce meaningful legislation reform to enable obstetricians and other medical practitioners to continue medical practice after July 1 2003.

AMA Victoria Vice-President Dr Chris Merry is one of the many doctors currently working in Ballarat who has expressed extreme anxiety about the future provision of healthcare.

“This is a crisis. Patients know it is a crisis. Doctors know it is a crisis.”

“The only person who doesn’t seem to get it or doesn’t seem to care is the Premier and that is a tremendous shame for all Victorians, because ultimately it is they who suffer” said Dr Merry.

Fellow Ballarat based doctor and long-time advocate for the rights of rural Victorians Dr Mark Yates, supported Dr Merry, suggesting the Premier’s indifference to the issue was a slap in the face of country Victoria.

“It appears that Premier Bracks is willing to turn his back on the healthcare needs of the people of Victoria, especially those in rural and regional areas.”

“Why the people of Ballarat and Victoria should be denied the rights that Mr Bracks himself has been fortunate enough to access in the past defies good sense?” said Dr Yates.
