Rural GP to lead AMA Victoria
Dr Sam Lees is the new President of AMA Victoria after being elected unopposed by the AMA Victoria Council last night.
Dr Lees has been a Vice-President of AMA Victoria for the past ten years and during this period has been a vital and tireless commentator on rural health and medical politics.
A general practitioner in Korumburra in South Gippsland, Dr Lees is passionate about providing strong, cohesive and informed representation for all medical practitioners in Victoria.
“During my term as AMA Victoria President, I will ensure that all doctors; specialists and general practitioners; salaried and self-employed; junior doctors and medical students have a vigorous and unified voice, and that their interests and concerns will be robustly prosecuted in the public arena” said Dr Lees
“Hospital and public health will be kept on the agenda and the right of people to have appropriate access to quality healthcare will be strongly promoted.”
“I will advocate for the poor health status of the disadvantaged to be recognised and for processes to be developed to deal with such inequalities.”
Dr Lees is involved in general practitioner registrar education and is a member of the Victorian Advisory Committee on General Practice, The Australian Rural and Remote Workforce Agency Group and the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria.
At the same meeting, Dr Mark Yates was re-elected as Chairman of the Victoria Council. Dr David Bainbridge was elected as Vice-President as were Drs Chris Merry and Douglas Travis, whose re-election sees them joining Dr Kate Duncan and Mukesh Haikerwal as Vice Presidents of AMA Victoria. Dr Robert House was re-elected as Treasurer.
Dr Peter Thurlow was awarded an AMA Victoria Gold Medal in recognition of his outstanding service to AMA Victoria, the profession and the community.
Dr Lees takes over from Dr Mukesh Haikerwal who has been AMA Victoria President for the past two years.
