State Government must stop dodging the Indemnity issue

AMA Victoria has demanded the State Government act now to diffuse what is fast becoming the biggest medical workforce crisis in Victoria’s history.

With only a few more weeks before doctors have to make final decisions about their future the State Government is continuing to show a blatant disregard for the health of all Victorians.

AMA Victoria President Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said he was absolutely flabbergasted by the Premier and his Cabinet’s indifference to the disaster unravelling at their doorstep.

“In recent weeks we have seen pregnant women protest about medical indemnity inaction in Ballarat, we have seen the public turn out in force to town meetings and one thousand of Victoria’s clinicians joining forces to rally for change.”

“The Government can no longer sweep this problem under the carpet”

“I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I am sick of hearing from the Government that a rescue package is just around the corner.”

“All I can say is it must be an awfully large corner because the same line has been peddled for months on end now” said Dr Haikerwal

The potential for a mass exodus of doctors and the consequent plunge in services was already having a knock-on effect through the health sector according to Dr Haikerwal.

“Shockwaves are hitting our already stretched public hospitals across Victoria and this lack of certainty makes health planning impossible.”

Dr Haikerwal said that the medical profession is Victoria was desperate for a more certain working environment and that could only be achieved with State Government action that:

  • Limits the time within which action can be commenced
  • Establishing a true test of negligence
  • A threshold to reduce access to general damages

Commenting on the need for tort law reform Dr Haikerwal sent a timely reminder that doctors are not aiming to remove people’s rights but to preserve access to vital health services and compensation where medical negligence is proven.
