Victorian Doctors join forces to send a clear message on Medical Indemnity
The immediate crisis in Medical Indemnity will sound the death knell for quality health care in the State of Victoria with doctors indicating they are completely under-whelmed with the lack of State Government response on the issue.
AMA Victoria President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said the State Government’s unwillingness to consider Medical Indemnity as a priority healthcare issue would spell disaster for the medical workforce and the delivery of health services.
“Already we have had several doctors, and I’m not just talking three or four, from all fields of medicine advise that as of 1st July 2003 they will leave medicine altogether or restrict the procedures they perform” said Dr Haikerwal.
“A vibrant and committed medical workforce is the very heartbeat of healthcare in this state and if you start messing with the heart then the whole body falls apart.”
Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said Victorian doctors too would stage a protest rally, similar to today’s events in Sydney. He said action must be taken by the State Government to remedy the appalling situation in Medical Indemnity.
“On Friday there was a meeting of Finance Ministers in Perth. Nothing that came out of the meeting allays the fears doctors have about practising medicine in Victoria beyond 1st July.”
“The State Government must stop the smoke and mirrors act and listen to the desperate concerns of the medical profession and the community it serves.”
“What doctors want is a considered approach involving the vital law reform that will allow us to do what we do best – care for the community.”
“We issue this challenge to you Premier Bracks – do not leave the citizens of Victoria wondering who will be around to deliver their babies, unblock their arteries and look after their mother’s crook knees after July this year” said Dr Haikerwal.
