Choice is not an option for smokers

AMA Victoria President, Dr Sam Lees today welcomed the Bracks Government smoking ban inside all buildings in Victoria, except private homes by 2007 but expressed concern about the timeliness of the ban implementation.

Dr Lees said the effects of active and passive smoking were so well documented that freedom of choice was not a valid argument against the bans.

“To endanger the health and life of others is not an option, just as speeding on the road cannot be tolerated. It is no different to the issue of wearing seatbelts - the cost to the community far outweighs personal choice,” Dr Lees said.

Dr Lees said that illnesses caused by smoking were one of the biggest burdens on our health system, and account for too much hospitalisation and too many premature deaths, so any moves to reduce smoking are to be applauded.

“We urge the entertainment industry to support this community safety initiative. No government or employer should allow employees and patrons to be exposed to the harmful effects of smoking and we certainly would not like to see any delays in the implementation of such measures,” Dr Lees said.

Dr Lees said that a study published in the British Medical Journal shows non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke have an up to 60 per cent greater risk of developing heart disease.

“It’s about ensuring the right of non-smokers to smoke-free air,” Dr Lees said.
