AMA Victoria says go drink for drink

AMA Victoria President, Dr Mark Yates today appealed to Victorians to take care when drinking alcohol this holiday season and remember the ‘one for one’ rule when drinking: One glass of water between each alcoholic drink.

“The combination of the Victorian summer heat and excessive alcohol consumption is a recipe for serious health problems, violence and injury.

“At this time of year doctors see increased in domestic violence, assaults, drownings, road tragedies and suicide as a direct result of alcohol abuse – and innocent people are often the ones who suffer the most,” Dr Yates said.

“While children and the elderly are more susceptible to heat exhaustion, it is important for everyone to drink plenty of water throughout the hot summer days.  This is particularly important when drinking alcohol drinks as alcohol dehydrates the body putting strain on kidneys.

Binge drinking is defined as heavy drinking over a short period of time, or drinking continuously over a number of days or weeks.

“Doctors see long term health problems including heart disease, liver disease, circulation problems, stroke, dementia, and a range of cancers in people who consistently abuse alcohol, either as binge or consistent heavy drinkers.

Dr Yates said a person did not need to be a heavy drinker to suffer serious health problems and young people in particular were very susceptible to damage.

“Research shows short-term or moderate alcohol consumption drinking impairs learning and memory far more in younger people than adults. Adolescents need only drink half as much as adults for their memory to be impaired.

“Kids learn by example. Parents and other role models in the community need to be aware that their often dangerous behaviour is being copied by children and teenagers.”

The message:
During the holiday period, the AMA Victoria is calling on the general public to do their bit to reduce the harm caused by alcohol:

· Drink alcohol in moderation
· Don’t drink and drive or operate machinery
· Drink slowly
· Eat before or while drinking
· Don’t drink if you’re pregnant
· Alternate each glass (or equivalent) of alcoholic drink with a glass of water
