Doctors welcome Sentinel Report

The Australian Medical Association Victoria President, Dr Mark Yates says doctors should be commended for their increasing support of the sentinel event reporting system in the state’s hospitals.

“The community should be assured that the increase in reports is due to doctors’ recognition of the importance of the reporting system to achieving improvements in the quality of care for patients,” Dr Yates said.

Dr Yates said public hospitals investigated each reported event to identify opportunities to prevent a re-occurrence.

“This system offers excellent opportunities for doctors and hospitals to improve quality of care and hospitals should be ensuring their doctors have confidence in the processes,” Dr Yates said.

He said the State Government needed to look at the high incidence of reports from rural hospitals in terms of the adequacy of funding for these hospitals.
