New President for AMA Victoria
Dr Mark Yates was elected unopposed as President of AMA Victoria tonight.
Dr Yates takes over the position of President following the 2 year contribution of Dr Sam Lees, a rural GP in Korumburra in South Gippsland.
Dr Mark Yates is a geriatrician and Clinical Director Subacute Medicine at Ballarat Health Services.
AMA Victoria Council members elected Dr Chris Merry, (a surgical registrar), Dr Harry Hemley a Northcote GP and Dr Doug Travis a urologist Vice Presidents of the AMA Victoria Board.
Dr Yates said he was keen for AMA Victoria to pursue issues relating to mental health, ensuring Victoria has a sufficient and well trained medical workforce, public hospital waiting lists/elective surgery, rural health and protecting Tort Law reforms.
“I believe AMA is an essential part of the healthcare system ensuring a vibrant medical profession able to provide Victorians with excellent and independent advice and treatment,” Dr Yates said.
Dr Yates said that AMA Victoria will tackle workforce issues that aim to strengthen and support Victoria’s medical workforce with the push for more fully funded undergraduate positions and ensuring that training provides quality, opportunity and service provision, especially in rural and outer metropolitan areas.
“AMA’s diversity is what gives AMA its strength. We are the only medical group that represents all aspects of the medical profession,” Dr Yates said.
