Think To Drink This Christmas - in partnership with South East Water
South East Water and the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) have advised the community to stay hydrated during the festive season.
Despite Melbourne being under permanent water saving rules the local water authority encourages residents to drink plenty of water, particularly on hotter days and during/after consuming alcohol.
South East Water Managing Director, Mr Dennis Cavagna, said that while it was important to cut back on water use around the home, keeping hydrated is extremely important.
“Although we encourage residents to save water around the house and garden we never advise anyone to reduce their own water intake.
“Think to drink water at all times, particularly as we are expecting a dry and hot summer.”
The Australian Medical Association Victoria President, Dr Mark Yates echoed this call saying it was important for Victorians to drink plenty of water through the summer, particularly those most at risk of dehydration - the elderly, young children and those consuming alcohol.
“Our bodies are made up of 70% water. Water is essential to regulate body temperature, carry nutrients, and remove toxins and waste materials and for brain function.
“The frail elderly are at greatest risk of dehydration because they often don’t feel thirsty even when their body water is low.
“Young children also tend to be at risk of dehydration through exertion. It is important that they drink water and not sugary fizzy drinks which will only dehydrate them more.
“Encourage children to drink tap water as it contains fluoride which will protect against tooth decay.
“Symptoms of dehydration include headaches, lethargy, mood changes and slow responses, dry nasal passages, dry or cracked lips, dark-coloured urine, weakness, tiredness, confusion and hallucinations.
“It’s important for everyone to drink plenty of water throughout the hot summer days. This is particularly important when drinking alcoholic drinks as alcohol dehydrates the body,” Dr Yates said.
