406 new doctors hit Victoria’s hospital wards

This week a record number of new doctors will start their working careers in Victorian public hospitals.

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates congratulated the 406 medical graduates on achieving this important milestone in their life.

“Medicine is more than a career. It is a calling which requires far more than excellent academic performance at university,” Dr Yates said.

“To become a doctor requires determination and a very genuine commitment to help others by making a positive difference to their health and wellbeing,” Dr Yates said.

“These young doctors will be making an invaluable contribution to the capacity of our hospitals to deliver high quality patient care while they continue their medical education to achieve their specialist qualifications.”

“The medical workforce is changing with women accounting for more than 50 per cent of young doctors and more of the profession choosing to work part-time.

“This new generation of doctors is no less dedicated than their senior colleagues but they are aware of the importance of balancing their patient commitments with safe working hours and time for family.

Dr Yates said this year was seeing the largest ever intake of new doctors into Victoria’s hospitals, exceeding last year’s Intern intake of 397.

“These Interns will have the support of AMA as they face the challenges of this first stage of their professional careers, particularly on issues such as demanding workloads and support for their ongoing clinical education.”

“It is vital for the future delivery of high quality health care in this state that they get all the support they need from hospitals, government and AMA not only in these early years but throughout their career,” Dr Yates said.

Ends.

(NB the 2006 Intern year starts Monday 9 January 2006 however the Interns begin their orientation at the hospitals on various days during this week)
