AMA Victoria welcomes hospital bed boost

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates today welcomed the Liberal Party’s health policy, saying it addressed a number of problem areas in Victoria’s health system.
“The commitment to an additional 900 hospital beds, 100 intensive care beds and open and transparent assessment of outpatient waiting times are all very positive,” Dr Yates said.

“Both the major parties have come up with substantial health policies, showing the parties recognise the need to improve health services in Victoria.

“The Liberal Party policy addresses a number of key areas which need urgent attention.

“Victoria has fewer beds per capita compared to other states and unsustainably high bed occupancy levels. The additional beds announced would help ease the bed shortage and should improve elective surgery cancellations.

“Critical care scholarships and financial incentives to increase the number of ICU nurses are also important in ensuring Victoria has the staff to open all available ICU beds.”

In addition, Dr Yates said: “AMA Victoria has been lobbying for open and transparent monitoring of outpatients, and I urge the Labor Party to match the Liberal Party policy on outpatients.”

Dr Yates said both major parties had so far failed to adequately address the decline in regional hospital emergency services and provide adequate long term policies on attracting and retaining country Victorian specialists.
