Children's services saved
AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates has welcomed the state government’s commitment to maintaining the essential outpatient paediatric services at the Monash Medical Centre.
“Doctors could not allow thousands of families who rely on these clinics to go through the stress of being told these clinics would close,” Dr Yates said.
“We welcome the media support which has helped avert a situation which would have had devastating consequences for thousands of children and their families.
“It is the government’s responsibility to operate and fund this outpatient service and it was simply trying to pass the buck.
“I am appalled the Health Minister would even suggest this was a pay dispute.
“This is about doctors fighting to retain a medical service needed by thousands of Victoria’s sick children.”
“It is about the Bracks government‘s obligations to provide these clinics within our public hospitals. We welcome the Minister’s confirmation that she accepts that responsibility.
“Hospital actions like this are forced by a lack of government funding, and are jeopardising the quality of care doctors can provide in our public hospitals. This is one more reason doctors are extremely concerned for the future of Victoria’s public hospitals, “Dr Yates said.
