Complaints Against Medical Practitioners Low

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates has welcomed figures released this week confirming the high standard of professionalism of Victorian medical practitioners.

“Figures released by the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria this week show an extremely low level of complaints against doctors, especially given there were more than 40 million patient/practitioner contacts in the last financial year,” Dr Yates said.

There were 690 complaints recorded with the MPBV during 2005. Unprofessional conduct was found to have occurred in just over 60 cases. The majority of these were not serious.

In an ideal world no-one would have reason to complain. However, Dr Yates said people had to be realistic and remember medical practitioners were human and mistakes could occur.

“However, clearly these figures indicate Victorian medical practitioners are operating at a very high standard.

“It also shows that the current system of self-regulation is operating effectively, and changes being pushed through parliament late last year by the State Government are unnecessary,” Dr Yates said.
