Donut fundraisers irresponsible

Reports that Victorian schools may be signing up to Krispy Kreme to help raise funds is appalling according to AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates.

Dr Yates said obesity in school children was a serious and increasing problem in Victoria, and fundraisers such as this would undo the good work being done to ensure our children are healthy and active.

“Junk food should be banned from our schools, fundraisers such as this send the wrong message to children and make it difficult for parents who are trying to ensure their children eat healthy food.

“Fundraisers using unhealthy products such as chocolate or donuts are unnecessary when there are many other healthy alternatives which would send the right message to children and can be just as successful.

“We know childhood obesity is a problem, and unfortunately, it can lead to health problems for children in their adult life.

“It is disappointing schools need to raise funds by using the junk food industry,” Dr Yates said.
