Gippsland paediatricians resign

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates said he was greatly concerned by the resignation of two paediatricians from Central Gippsland Health Service today.

“These resignations are the result of a failure by the Bracks Government to value our specialists.

“This is just another example of Victorian doctors being forced to work in unsustainable conditions without adequate support from their hospital.

“We are in the grip of a severe doctor shortage and the Sale community cannot afford to lose these doctors. The hospital and government should be doing everything possible to address their concerns,” Dr Yates said.

“Dr Goss is a strong campaigner for quality care for rural children and has raised some very genuine concerns about conditions for children in rural Victorian hospitals.

“The loss of such a committed doctor should be unacceptable to the Sale community.

“We’ve had Werribee*, Portland** and now Sale, how many more instances of disgruntled doctors leaving from our public hospitals do we need before the Bracks Government takes action?”

End release

*Werribee had more than six doctors resign from the Werribee Mercy Hospital over a short period of time due to work condition concerns.

**Due to the loss of a number of doctors’ services, the busy accident and emergency department at Portland Hospital has doctors rostered on to cover only some shifts, forcing people to travel up to an hour to access the next nearest A and E Department.
