Nothern Hospital - No spin, the facts - Doctor shortage strikes again

Doctors have confirmed the pressures of staff shortages at the Northern Hospital over the weekend.

AMA Victoria understands Northern Hospital had a doctor shortage over the weekend which resulted in two doctors being principally responsible for the majority of patients in the 260 bed hospital.

“One was a night medical registrar responsible for admitting patients into the hospital, leaving one doctor responsible for immediate ward calls for the majority of patients in the hospital,” AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates said.

AMA understands this was the case between 3pm Sunday and 7am Monday.

“While there may have been have been registrar back-up from other units at the hospital, these registrars would have been committed to patient care issues in their own units.

Dr Yates said the situation at Northern Hospital over the weekend was further evidence of a looming crisis in Victorian public hospitals.

“Full credit must be given to the doctors and other staff on duty because they struggled through, but it is unreasonable and unsafe to put that amount of pressure on doctors and nursing staff.

“Incidents such as this and the closure last week of the Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department for five hours, because there was no doctor available, are unacceptable. They are further proof the Bracks Government is failing to address the serious doctor shortage in Victoria.

“The Bracks Government’s inaction is putting patients at risk. It must ensure our hospitals are adequately funded and ensure we have enough doctors.

“If the Bracks Government does not put in measures to ensure Victoria can attract and retain doctors, cases such as at Werribee and Northern will become common.

“Doctors are exhausted, frustrated and angry. Many are working under extreme pressure in our public hospitals and it is untenable, they can only hold up the system for so long. The Bracks Government must improve conditions for our doctors.

“With poor conditions and other states paying doctors 50 per cent more, it is little wonder our hospitals are struggling to retain and attract doctors.

“It is only luck that a tragedy has been avoided so far.”
