Progress slow
Talks between AMA Victoria (representing public hospital doctors) and the government and public hospitals, through the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, continued this morning.
AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates said: “Very slow progress is being made, but we will continue to meet in good faith. AMA Victoria is concerned there is still little sign the government recognises the issues facing doctors, public hospitals and Victorians.
“Doctors do not take action lightly. The meeting last week was the biggest meeting of public hospital doctors on record. That should have sent a clear message to the government about the level of concern amongst doctors and that there are serious problems facing the future of our public hospitals.
“Doctors are currently determining what further action will be taken.
“Minimal impact on patients is a priority and was overwhelmingly supported at the meeting on Thursday by doctors.
“The government needs to recognise the issues because if they don’t fix these problems now, patient care will suffer in the long run.
“Doctors work in the public hospital system because they feel they can make a difference to everyday people, those that can’t afford private health insurance. However, conditions for doctors in Victorian public hospitals are poor compared to other states and doctors are feeling very frustrated,” Dr Yates said.
