Prompt conclusion welcome in RWH case

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates today welcomed the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria’s prompt conclusion to the Royal Women’s Hospital case.

However, Dr Yates said the case highlighted the need for tighter controls on who could make a complaint to the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria.

“This case has been running for more than five years. The patient, doctors and hospital staff have been forced to endure enormous strain and anxiety over this complaint. It highlights the need for tighter regulation about who can make a complaint to the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria.”

Dr Yates said it was unreasonable the doctors involved had this case hanging over them for more than five years.

“It is very concerning that someone completely unrelated to a case, in this instance with a political agenda, can make a complaint and cause considerable undue stress to the patient and doctors involved.

“I am pleased the MPBV has handed down its findings promptly after the conclusion of legal proceedings,” Dr Yates said.
