Victorian mental health experts meet today

Victoria’s leading health professionals and patient advocates will meet today to define a way forward for mental health services in Victoria.

The one day forum, Mental Health: The Way Forward, will bring together senior doctors who deal with mental health issues from all levels, from patients presenting at emergency departments to GPs and psychiatrists. Representatives from patient advocacy groups such as Sane Australia, Health Issues Centre, and Alzheimer’s Australia, will also be attending.

The forum has been organised by AMA Victoria. President Dr Mark Yates said mental health had been a neglected issue for many years but was now receiving the attention it required.

“The aim of the forum is to bring together a range of experts whose knowledge and experience will stimulate debate and provide guidance about future options for mental health services in Victoria.

“Victorians must have access to quality services, and we will be discussing ways to ensure that can occur.

“It is hoped by the end of the forum, a set of future actions can be produced to help guide mental health services in Victoria.”

End release.

The forum will be held at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, College of Surgeons’ Gardens, Spring St, Melbourne.

Dr Yates will be attending and available for further comment.
