Water the key to good health during the festive season

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates has urged all Victorians to enjoy the Christmas/New Year period safely by keeping hydrated with water.

“At this time of the year doctors often see an increase in domestic violence, assaults, drownings, road tragedies and suicide as a result of alcohol abuse. Unfortunately, it is often innocent people who suffer the most.

“People are more likely to consume alcohol at risky levels at this time of year, resulting in avoidable tragedies.

“AMA Victoria is calling on Victorians to remember the ‘one for one’ rule if they are consuming alcohol - one glass of water between each alcoholic drink.

“Given the hot conditions we have been experiencing in Victoria, this rule is also particularly important to avoid dehydration.”

Dr Yates said the elderly and young were also particularly susceptible to heat exhaustion at this time of year, and he urged families to be vigilant.

“Dehydration can have serious consequences including death. Given the hot summer we are experiencing this year, it is particularly important for people to remember to drink enough water on hot days,” Dr Yates said.
