Yates to serve second term
Ballart-based geriatrician Dr Mark Yates will continue as president of AMA Victoria for another year after being re-elected unopposed.
Dr Yates was officially inducted for his second term as president last night.
Dr Yates said it had been both challenging and rewarding advocating for the health of Victorians and AMA members during the past year.
He said key issues on AMA Victoria’s agenda for doctors and patients included:
- Undertaking pay and condition negotiations on behalf of public hospital doctors
- Working towards ensuring Victoria is prepared for a bird flu pandemic
- Lobbying the government to ensure there is a clear rural health plan and support is given to ensure we can recruit and retain medical staff in country Victoria
- Lobbying to ensure changes to the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria allow it to continue to set standards and protect patient safety
- Ensuring continuity of care for chronically ill patients, including the elderly, between hospital and their general practitioner
- Timely implementation of clinical information systems
Ensuring action is taken on the doctor shortage which is beginning to cripple our healthcare system.
Dr Yates said it was also important the government resolve the lack of pay parity between Victoria and other states.
“A public health campaign on the growing issue of obesity in our communities and improving mental health services are also priorities in my next term as president,” Dr Yates said.
“AMA Victoria is in the unique position of being able to represent and receive input from all areas of medical practice, allowing us to debate, offer solutions and advocate on a broad range of health issues.
“Victoria is a leader in healthcare and I will work towards ensuring we do not lose that status.
“Doctors and healthcare in Victoria are facing challenging times, and I am honoured my colleagues have confidence in me to continue in the role of president for another year,” Dr Yates said.
“Managing my commitments with AMA Victoria, work and my family has been challenging and I thank everyone for their support. I look forward to another rewarding year as president.”
