Baby boom highlights need for more beds and better planning
Lack of capacity to meet the needs of Victoria’s growing birth rate highlights Victoria’s bed shortage and lack of planning to meet Victoria’s health needs, according to AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis.Dr Travis’ comments follow reports that women with uncomplicated pregnancies will be directed to have their babies at local suburban hospitals because of insufficient beds at the state’s three main maternity hospitals.
“This highlights a serious bed shortage is looming unless the State Government takes action.
“Many of the bigger services are already under pressure, which has been exacerbated by the closure of metropolitan obstetric services such as Rosebud, Williamstown and Moorabbin.
“This is another example of our public hospital system not having the appropriate plans in place to grow with the needs of the community.
“Victoria has an increasing population and birth rate. Our hospitals are the most efficient in Australia and the only way to meet increasing demand is to increase bed numbers and resources and keep existing services open.
“AMA Victoria looks forward to discussing these issues with the new Health Minister Daniel Andrews,” Dr Travis said.
