Bird flu preparedness: AMA Victoria supports proactive approach

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates today welcomed the proactive approach being taken by a Melbourne GP Clinic to test bird flu preparedness.

“Pandemic planning is very important and the exercise today demonstrates that GPs are taking pandemic planning and the welfare of the community seriously,” Dr Yates said.

“GP practices are an important small business in the community and will be in the frontline in any pandemic.

“It is vital gaps or shortfalls are identified now and resolved, so in the event of a pandemic, family doctors can continue to treat their patients and their practice can continue to run as smoothly as possible,” Dr Yates said.

“While there is still work to be done, it is pleasing the State Government has responded to calls by AMA Victoria to ensure GPs are involved in the planning process.”

Dr Yates said family doctors had to take into account many things in preparing for a pandemic, from care for all patients - not just those affected by the pandemic - to protecting themselves and staff.

“It is important to continually review plans and exercises like this keep the risk of pandemic at the forefront of GPs minds. The exercise today will be a valuable learning experience, not only for GPs but also government,” Dr Yates said.
