Deficits shows poor hospital planning
1 November 2007
Deficits reported by several of Melbourne’s major public hospital operators show increased demand and poor government planning, says AMA Victoria.
AMA Victoria President, Dr Doug Travis, says the State Government has not planned adequately to deal with the rising demand in Melbourne’s public hospitals.
“Emergency department presentations have increased substantially and this is putting a strain on Victoria’s doctors and nurses,” Dr Travis said.
Dr Travis says the Federal Government is not adequately funding public hospitals.
“The Federal Government needs to lift its contribution to Victoria’s public hospital funding from 41 to 50 per cent, to match the State Government’s funding contribution,” Dr Travis said.
“This would mean an extra $716m to adequately fund Victoria’s public hospitals to meet the rising demands.
“We need more beds, extra nurses, doctors and support staff, as well as a plan to invest for future health needs.”
