Doctors back car-free day

5 September 2007

The Australian Medical Association Victoria has welcomed plans for a car-free day in Melbourne’s CBD.

“This is an opportunity to encourage more CBD workers and shoppers to walk more, use public transport and bikes,” AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said.

“This plan needs to be supported. Good health is not an indulgence it is a necessity,” Dr Travis said.

“Getting people out of cars and on their feet is a good thing for everyone.

“It will have a positive impact on people’s health. We should be encouraging people to walk more and drive less at every opportunity.”

Dr Travis urged Melbourne City councillors, the State Government and public transport operators to get behind the car-free day proposed by the Centre for Sustainability Leadership.
