Doctors encourage Victorians to walk to work on 5 October

24 September 2007

The Australian Medical Association Victoria is encouraging individuals, businesses and organisations to take part in national Walk to Work Day on Friday 5 October 2007.

“Getting people on their feet is a great way to improve physical and mental health”, said AMA Victoria Vice President Dr Harry Hemley.

“On Walk to Work Day, Victorians can walk the whole way, or choose to take public transport, get off a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way to work.

Dr Hemley said lack of physical activity can lead to serious health problems and many Victorians are significantly heavier than their ideal weight.

“A combination of regular exercise and good nutrition is needed to achieve a healthy weight.

“Even simple things like using stairs instead of the escalator, or enjoying a lunchtime walk, can make a big difference,” he said.

Walk to Work Day is organised by the Pedestrian Council of Australia and proceeds raised support four leading Australian charities: the Heart Foundation, Australian Conservation Foundation, The Cancer Council and Diabetes Australia.
