Doctors welcome smoking milestone

The new smoking bans for licensed premises which apply from tomorrow are an important milestone in eradicating the harm caused by smoking, according to AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis.

“The State Government’s strong stance should be commended,” Dr Doug Travis said.

“Hopefully this new legislation will assist smokers to quit or at the very least reduce their smoking, whilst protecting non-smokers and people working in licensed premises.”

Dr Travis said AMA Victoria would be talking to the State Government about extending the bans further.

“The next logical step is to introduce bans on smoking in cars carrying children and in work vehicles.

“This is common sense legislation and would put Victoria in-line with legislation introduced in other states such as South Australia,” Dr Travis said.

“Smoking is the largest cause of preventable death in Australia, killing not only smokers but also those exposed to second hand smoke.

“It is ridiculous that children in Victoria can still be exposed to cigarette smoke, particularly in a confined space such as a vehicle where smoke is considerably more toxic.

“The State Government must extend the legislation and ensure new legislation on smoking is appropriately enforced,” Dr Travis said.
