Expo tackles doctor shortage

More than 1000 young doctors and medical students from around Australia are expected to converge on Melbourne tomorrow for the biggest promotion of Victoria’s public hospitals.

“The Medical Careers Expo provides a platform for Victoria’s teaching hospitals, regional hospitals and specialist medical colleges to promote their programs, in a bid to retain and attract young doctors to Victoria,” AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said.

“It is essential Victoria attracts graduating medical students as our universities are not producing enough doctors to fill the training positions in our public hospitals.

“In addition, with other states actively trying to poach our doctors and medical graduates, it is vital the benefits of working and training in Victoria are positively promoted.

“The careers expo has proven successful in attracting doctors to work in Victorian public hospitals in previous years.

“Given our serious doctor shortage, it is critical proactive initiatives such as this continue to be successful,” Dr Travis said.
