Fine line between happiness and heartbreak
16 December 2007
The annual office party could mean the difference between happiness and heartbreak this season, the President of AMA Victoria, Dr Doug Travis, said today.
“Office parties are great but employers and employees must be mindful of the tragedies that can happen through excessive drinking,” Dr Travis said.
“Doctors see pain and suffering at this time every year – and often it’s because people let their hair down, celebrate with a few too many drinks with their fellow office workers and then, without thinking, hop in the car to go home.
With so many office parties planned for this week across Victoria Dr Travis urged employers and employees to take care.
“Responsible serving of alcohol is critically important – and I would call on employers to have some cab charges or met tickets in their back pocket just in case staff need to be encouraged to leave their car keys in the office drawer.”
Dr Travis said consuming alcohol responsibly did not equate to being a wowser.
“There is nothing that doctors would like more than quiet and peaceful emergency departments this season,” he said. “We want every Victorian to be mindful of the risks of becoming another statistic of alcohol-related injury or disease.”
