Funding key issue in Victorian hospitals

02 October 2007

Victorian hospitals already have local boards with local CEOs, says AMA Victoria. The Federal Government proposals will make no difference to the governance structures for Victorian hospitals; the key issues with Victorian hospitals are about funding.

“This proposal does nothing to improve the funding and resources available to hospitals. More money, more beds, better infrastructure and more doctors and nurses are needed,” AMA Victoria President Dr Douglas Travis said today.

Dr Travis said that from the last two Australian Health Care Agreements, Victoria had lost indexation allowances worth around $340 million this year. “Despite the shortfall in funding from the Federal Government, Victoria’s hospitals are among the most efficient in the country,” he said. “The problems we have are about resources, not management structures.”

“There are plenty of problems with hospital management, but they are not about structure. The demands on the system are severe, and the only real answer in Victoria is more funding."

Dr Travis noted that it was important for doctors to be on the boards of all hospitals, and noted that this was difficult to achieve under current government rules in some rural towns.

“Again, funding is the key issue,” Dr Travis said. “Regardless of who wins government, Victoria will need a significant injection of federal funds to provide a quality health care system to the Victorian community.”
