Government funds could ease Ballarat’s GP shortage
19 October 2007
AMA Victoria is calling on the Federal Government to invest in long term strategies to ease Ballarat’s GP shortage.
AMA Victoria President, Dr Doug Travis, says funding for more GP training places is essential to provide general practice services into the future for Victoria’s growing regional communities.
“Health has been high on the election agenda but we haven’t yet heard any announcements which support General Practice,” Dr Travis said.
“Patients in Ballarat are struggling to find a family GP, and the doctors are over-worked and under pressure.
“The number of undergraduate medical places is increasing so we need this matched with the number of GP training places.
“A Federal Government commitment of $100m over 4 years could see the number of GP training places across Australia double; from 600 to 1200.”
