Hospitals report shows improvements needed
4 October 2007
AMA Victoria welcomes the state government’s sixth edition of the Your Hospitals report which highlights areas for improvement and the chronic lack of funding for Victoria’s public hospitals.
“It’s a real credit to the nurses, staff, and doctors in Victorian public hospitals that we have coped with the rising demand so far,” AMA Victoria President Dr Douglas Travis said.
“Large increases in demand are putting more pressure on staff, and this report shows that we need more funding and more beds in the Victorian public hospital system.”
Dr Travis said that from the last two Australian Health Care Agreements, Victoria had lost indexation allowances worth around $340 million this year.
“The Minister is right to point out that the share of federal government funding for hospitals has fallen,” he said.
“The federal government needs to lift its effort on public hospital funding.”
Dr Travis noted there are several areas of performance where Victorian hospitals have fallen short of the required standard, and said this demonstrates a capacity issue.
“We need more beds, and we need more doctors able to work happily and productively in our public hospitals.
“We have strong economic performance both in Victoria and nationally. Now is the time to invest – and invest substantially and strategically – in the future health of all Victorians.”
