Hundreds of new doctors hit Victoria’s hospital wards

The largest intake of new doctors will start at Victoria’s public hospitals from Monday (tomorrow), as the 2007 intern year begins.

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates welcomed the new interns and congratulated them on reaching this important milestone.

“445 new doctors will begin work this week in Victoria, a 9.6 per cent increase on intern places compared to last year.”

Dr Yates said medicine was more than a career and required determination and a very genuine commitment to help others.

“These doctors will be making an extremely valuable contribution to our hospitals that will help ensure our hospitals can continue to deliver high quality patient care.

“Given the current doctor shortage in Victoria, it is vital these doctors are given the support and appropriate clinical training required to ensure they can continue to have successful medical careers in Victoria.

“With intern numbers set to increase further in coming years, ensuring appropriate training and support measures are in place for young doctors in Victoria is vital,” Dr Yates said.

AMA Victoria will officially welcome new doctors to the profession at two special receptions this week. The annual AMA Victoria awards for the top student from the University of Melbourne and Monash University (the student who receives the highest aggregate mark for 2006) will be presented to Dr Robert Commons and Dr Marcus Robertson at these receptions.
